An American Daughter

Upon examining the program, it’s clear that this is actually just a vanity project, solely produced by the actress in the lead role, Jean Lichty. She is severely outclassed in acting prowess and performance by everyone else on the stage, and has a strange, stilted and stiff manner and way of speaking. Also, frankly, she appears about 30 years too old to be playing a mother of school age children, and an age peer of Montego Glover.  The play as a whole doesn’t have a strong resonance to today’s cultural and political climate, except to say “how quaint it is that we used to get up in arms about such trivial things in 90s politics”. I have a feeling Ms. Lichty chose the play strictly for the opportunity to play this part, which she does rather poorly. It’s an otherwise handsomely appointed production, no expense spared on creating the lovely set design. Ms. Lichty is clearly blessed with extensive financial resources. Good for her. Meh for us.
